History

Mezcal is exclusive to the state of Oaxaca, located in the Southeastern region of Mexico. Zapoteca Indians are a powerful and numerous tribe located in Oaxaca and the neighboring state of Guerrero. Recently, Zapoteca Indians have been reported to number almost 300,000, and with their kinsmen 750,000.

The Zapoteca were defeated only after several campaigns made by Spaniards between 1522 and 1527.

They were a highly advanced civilization who recorded their history using hieroglyphics. They claim the ruins of Mitla are the tombs of their ancestors.

In earlier times, the Zapoteca had an elaborate religious system, and human sacrifices were offered.

The tribe is now Catholic, but they maintain some of their ancient beliefs and practices, such as burying money with the dead.

The Huatulco Bays, originally named "Cuahtolco" by the Aztecs, are also located in the Southeastern region of Mexico on the Pacific Coast. Known for quiet white sand beaches, the area is now a tourist spot, especially the Santa Cruz Bay.

Straight

Serve a shot of Monte Alban straight in a shot glass with salt and lemon or lime to your taste.

Bat

1½ shots of Monte Alban Mezcal
4 shots of sangria
Serve with ice cubes.

Free Mezcal

2 shots of Monte Alban Mezcal
2 ice cubes
Lemon juice, lime soda to your taste, shake well.

Parrot

1 shot Monte Alban Mezcal
3 cubes of ice
Fill with grapefruit soda, garnish with slice of orange, serve in rocks glass.

Oaxaca Cocktail

¾ shot of Monte Alban Mezcal
1 shot of fresh pineapple juice
1 tsp. of syrup
1 tsp. of lemon juice
½ cup of crushed ice
Mix in blender, coat the rim of a champagne glass with salt, pour in champagne glass, garnish with a cherry.

Brown Zapoteca

1 shot of Monte Alban Mezcal
1 shot of Sabroso Coffee Liqueur
Pinch of cinnamon
Shake with chopped ice, serve in a salt-rimmed glass.

Huatulco

1 shot of Monte Alban Mezcal
1 shot of coconut extract
¼ shot sugar syrup
Crushed ice
Mix and serve in glass.

Silk Stockings

½ shot of Monte Alban Mezcal
1/3 shot of grenadine
1¾ shot evaporated milk
2 ice cubes
Mix in blender, serve in glass, sprinkle with cinnamon and garnish with a cherry.

Xochiti Cocktail

½ shot of Monte Alban Mezcal
½ shot of sugar syrup
¼ shot of orange liqueur
½ shot of lemon juice
¼ cup shaved ice
Shake with chopped ice, serve in a salt-rimmed glass.

Russian Special

2 shots of Monte Alban Mezcal
1 shot of cream
2 shots Sabroso Coffee Liqueur
Beat slightly in a blender with shaved ice, serve in a cocktail glass and sprinkle with cinnamon.

Bloody Mary

2 shots of Monte Alban Mezcal
4 shots of ice-cold tomato juice
1 shot of orange juice
3 drops of Tabasco sauce
1 pinch of ground pepper
½ shot of lemon juice
Mix with ice and serve.
